The CIPS NL Women in IT (WIT) event is an annual daylong conference targeting Grade 9 girls in the St. John’s and Corner Brook areas as prospective candidates for IT and technical careers. The event is usually held each year in early May.
The day’s activities expose the participants to a wide range of careers and provide inspiration for their academic plans, they also have the opportunity to meet female leaders and mentor working within the provincial IT Industry. This will facilitate the added benefit of allowing the girls to identify with the speakers and to picture themselves as having the ability to be successful too. As well, by bringing together participants from different schools, and gathering them at a college campus, the girls will have the opportunity to view themselves in a new context.
300 students in St. John’s and 100 students in Corner Brook will participate in the event along with teachers/chaperones.
Various studies show that women "remain significantly underrepresented in Canadian advanced technology sectors" and that "women who are employed in high-tech firms are also significantly less likely than men to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities."
